When is a Set-Up needed?

You may be surprised to know that every new instrument will need setting up.

Although you may have payed many hundreds of pounds for your new, high-quality instrument, it will still need setting up. Guitars are shipped out witha factory set-up. This is to allow for movement in the wood, due to climate changes (especially humidity, as they often travel halfway around the planet.

Most shops will set-up their guitars before they go on display. Some shops do a good job of this, but sadly, some not so good.

It is unlikely that the big online dealers will unbox every guitar to set them up. This is worth considering when you are thinking of buying online. It may not actually be a saving.

Your guitar could need a set-up if it will not stay in tune, or the intonation is out as you play higher up the neck, or it may be difficult to play and may rattle and buzz if you change your gauge of strings. Or indeed, if it just doesn't feel right any more.
