Fret Dressing - Stoning or Levelling

When frets are uneven or worn to the point when strings do not ring out or choke or buzz on some frets, but not all. This could indicate that the frets need dressing.

This involves levelling frets with a fret levelling file, then crowning the frets with a fret crowning file. This process can create heat in the frets, and can alter fret height very slightly, so another fine levelling with an oilstone will rectify this, and also remove any file marks.

The fret crowns and any minor re-crowning can be done at this stagen and sharp fret ends can be rounded off.

File and stone marks must then be removed using successively finer grades of wet-and-dry paper. They are finally polished to a totally smooth finish. The guitar is then ready to be set up.
